A spoof of all things English, Utopia Limited imagines what might happen if the local Polynesian island ruler, King Paramount, decides his people should all adopt English customs and institutions, even going so far as converting each inhabitant into a “company limited.” The King even converts his realm into a limited monarchy with a two-party parliamentary system. Uh oh, we know how that is going to work out.
6/26 Pat Conroy's Books into Movies Series: The Lords of Discipline LOH 1 - 3pm
63 Seats Available
Instructor(s): Dr. Pat Wellington
Resident Fee: FREE

The Lords of Discipline is a 1983 American film based on the novel by Pat Conroy and directed by Franc Roddam. The film stars David Keith, Robert Prosky, Judge Reinhold, Bill Paxton, William Hope, Michael Biehn, and Olympic boxer Mark Breland. The college scenes were filmed primarily at Wellington College in England, as none of the American military academies would allow filming on their grounds because of the book's less-than-positive portrayal of life at a military academy. The year is 1964, and Carolina Military Institute is about to do something it's never done in its entire history—allow a black man to become a member of the Corps of Cadets. Will McLean, a senior private, has been assigned to watch over him to ensure that he makes it through the year. This assignment forces him to stand against the power of "the Ten," an alleged secret brotherhood within the Corps of Cadets sworn to uphold CMI's highest standards – by any and all means necessary.
7/3 Pat Conroy's Books into Movies Series: The Great Santini LOH 1 - 3pm
51 Seats Available
Instructor(s): Dr. Pat Wellington
Resident Fee: FREE
Non-resident Fee: FREE
The Great Santini is a 1979 film which tells the story of a Marine officer whose success as an F-4 Phantom military aviator contrasts with his shortcomings as a husband and father. The film explores the high price of heroism and self-sacrifice. It stars Robert Duvall, Blythe Danner, Michael O'Keefe, Lisa Jane Persky, Julie Anne Haddock, Brian Andrews, Stan Shaw and David Keith. The film is set in 1962 before widespread American involvement in the Vietnam War and is based on the novel of the same name by Pat Conroy. In the novel Conroy makes the point that Santini is a warrior without a war, and in turn is at war alternately with the service that he loves and his family.
7/10 Pat Conroy's Books into Movies Series: The Prince of Tides LOH 1 - 3pm
54 Seats Available
Instructor(s): Dr. Pat Wellington

Non-resident Fee: FREE
The Prince of Tides is a 1991 romantic drama film based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Pat Conroy; the film stars Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte. It tells the story of the narrator's struggle to overcome the psychological damage inflicted by his dysfunctional childhood in South Carolina. Streisand directed and produced the film in addition to starring in it. Conroy and Becky Johnston adapted the screenplay.[2]

In the Grand Duchy of Pfennig-Halbphennig, Ernest Dummkopf, leader of a band of actors, is planning a conspiracy to overthrow the monarchy and install himself as the new duke. His fellow actors will receive positions that accord with their positions in the acting company. The rebels don't have a secret password or a secret handshake, but know each other by eating a sausage roll. Needless to say, things go rapidly downhill, to be rescued at the last minute.
8/13 Gilbert & Sullivan Film Series: TBD LOH 1 - 3pm
77 Seats Available
Instructor(s): Richard Belz
Resident Fee: FREE
Non-resident Fee: FREE
A straw poll will be taken at the above two movies to decide on the final one. Perhaps there is one you missed, or one you would like to see again. If a reasonable plurality can't be obtained the final presentation will be the “Pirates of Penzance” version from this series (as opposed to the one previously shown which starred Kevin Klein).
