Cecil John Rhodes: Founding Father of South Africa
Cecil the Lion made international headlines recently. What about the man he was named after? The sickly son of an English preacher, Cecil John Rhodes left his homeland for the perilous frontier of 1870s southern Africa. Building a diamond empire while still very young, he turned his attention to politics. Guided by a vision of worldwide British domination which included retaking the United States, he focused on the immediate goal of expanding Crown control from the Cape of Good Hope to Cairo. The result was war, wealth, culture clashes, education, and racial rancor, among many other things. Learn the story of the man who founded Rhodesia, set the ball rolling for South Africa, and continues to be regarded as both heroic and villainous.
